Leadership Institutions

IOLTA Leadership Financial Institutions
Financial institutions play a critical role in the success of Vermont’s IOLTA program. By offering competitive interest rates on IOLTA accounts, banks and credit unions directly increase the funding available for civil legal aid and access to justice statewide.
The Vermont Bar Foundation is launching the IOLTA Leadership Bank designation to recognize financial institutions that demonstrate leadership in supporting access to justice for underserved Vermonters.
What Is an IOLTA Leadership Bank?
IOLTA Leadership Banks are financial institutions that commit to offering interest rates on IOLTA accounts that meaningfully support civil legal aid in Vermont.
To qualify as an IOLTA Leadership Bank, an institution must offer:
-
An interest rate at or above 65% of the low end of the Federal Funds Target Rate, and
-
A minimum floor rate of 1%, which applies if the Federal Funds Target Rate falls below 1%.
This structure helps ensure consistent and reliable funding for legal services, even during periods of declining or fluctuating interest rates.
Why This Matters for Attorneys
Vermont attorneys and law firms can play an important role in advancing access to justice by choosing to establish and maintain their IOLTA accounts with IOLTA Leadership Banks.
When attorneys bank with institutions offering competitive IOLTA rates:
-
More funding is generated for civil legal aid
-
Legal services reach more Vermonters in need
-
The justice system becomes more accessible and equitable statewide
Your choice of bank has a direct and meaningful impact.
